Great God Series

We are currently going through a series of messages on the attributes of God. This is part of a larger series covering CenterPoint's core convictions. As a church, we have five core convictions that spell out the acrostic G.R.A.C.E. The first of these is Great God. In his book, Knowing God, J. I. Packer states that the evangelical church is following a trend of our age which “spawns great thoughts of man and leaves room for only small thoughts of God.” As we spend time in our Bibles we see that this is clearly a reversal of Biblical teaching. God’s word teaches us that God is great and that we are not. In fact, mankind is dependent on God for everything, and in everything should give thanks. This summer, as we study the Biblical foundations of our core convictions, we will be spending an extended amount of time studying God.

In 2 Timothy, Paul says to Timothy, “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” Here, Paul is saying that as we study the Bible we become wise for salvation. I think this means that first we come to an accurate understanding of how we get right with God and then how we grow in our relationship with God. Surely, an accurate understanding of who God is, and then living in accordance with this understanding, is one of the essential ways that we grow “wise for salvation.”

We started this series by looking at the providence of God. This teaches that God so governs and rules His creation that no event occurs apart from His guiding hand. A key verse in understanding the providence of God is Matthew 10:29 which says, “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.”

The second message dealt with the kindness and severity of God. The key verse for this study was Romans 11:22 which states, “Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.”

This week we will be studying the aseity of God. This teaches that God did not create the world or mankind because of any need, but rather out of the overflowing greatness of His glory.

If you live in the St Croix Valley, we would like to invite you to join us in the study of our great God. We believe that as we get to know God better our lives will be greatly enriched.
